Bio
Christa Riemann was born in Düsseldorf and studied painting and graphic arts at the Freie Akademie Rhein-Ruhr. Her work has been featured in numerous galleries, solo exhibitions, and group exhibitions.
In her mostly large-format works, she offers insights into the nature of animals and impressions of nature. Her images are complex and constructed with a captivating dramaturgy. If you have previously doubted that animals have personalities, her work will disabuse you of this notion. She portrays the individual as a soulful creature, thus providing a clear counterpoint to the widespread societal understanding of animals as livestock.
Emotional animal portraits and richly nuanced works are representative of her extensive collection. The paintings of the painter Christa Riemann are created out of a respectful love for animals, coupled with a great deal of curiosity about their mysterious personalities and the individual. At the same time, her portraits can also be understood as a protest against today’s form of factory farming.
The artist incorporates numerous raw materials into her sculptures, ranging from cellulose, wood, metal, and many others. Despite this variety of sometimes quite heavy materials, the objects always exhibit a great lightness, which is indeed reflected in their low weight. Nevertheless, the craftsmanship often conveys the impression of bronze-like material. A certain degree of weather resistance is also present.
Through the use of found objects, mostly wood, the figures are connected to nature and represent a snapshot of their metamorphic development. The static state of the sculptures thus contradicts the dynamic nature of the creative process.
